Artificial Light at Night (ALAN)

Artificial light at night poses significant challenges to bird and insect populations. Migrating birds in the spring and fall are disoriented by ALAN. They are drawn into urban areas where they face increased risks of collision with buildings or waste energy flying around and calling out in confusion. In addition, ALAN significantly affects nocturnal insect populations. Studies across the globe have shown that, on average, the abundance of insects at night is 31% higher than during the day! And ALAN directly interferes with the development, movement, foraging, and reproductive success of these nocturnal insects, contributing to the dramatic decrease in insect populations worldwide.

So, what can you do here in Berwyn to help our bird and insect populations?
